USPS names 4 low-performing post offices in Chicago; The report shows 62K email articles delayed by several months

CHICAGO (WLS) – There have been thousands of missing or delayed pieces of mail and there have been no clear answers from the Chicago Postal Service.

On Thursday morning, an American congressman got involved.

Residents in the south and southwest have been complaining for months about problems with the delivery of correspondence.

A new report released on Thursday revealed deficiencies in the post office.

The USPS Inspector General’s report highlights the four worst-performing locations in Chicago:

  • 83 and Ashland
  • 77th and Cottage Grove
  • 46th and Cottage Grove
  • 3600-block on West 79th Street.
  • Delayed e-mail, including letters and packages from those locations, totals more than 62,000 from September to February.

Congressman Bobby Rush, who joined local councilors and mayors in Alsip and Evergreen Park at a morning news conference, found it unacceptable.

“People who depend on the postal service, the elderly, families, other people, depending on the day-to-day postal service – it’s an absolute, epic, total, undeniable failure,” Rush said.

He demands that the postmaster resign and the management be reviewed.

The report he highlighted also revealed inaccurate reporting of delayed correspondence.

Some of these included “voter information” from the secretary of state.

“We don’t deserve the kind of treatment we get in Chicago,” said Pat Dowell, a third-department counselor. “This is not just a problem in the south; it is happening in the north and in the suburbs. It is time for a change.”

The report also focused on the improper scanning and handling of hundreds of parcels and the rates of absence of the letter carrier, which in some cases reached 50%.
