Facebook users took Twitter and another social media on Friday to report that they were disconnected, for no explicit reason, from the big blue app. Memes and phrase “So Facebook” appeared quickly during the incident, for which the company apologized on Saturday.

Apparently, the massive disconnection of an unknown number of people was due to a “configuration change”, the company announced on Twitter. He didn’t explain much beyond that. However, Engadget reported that it appears that the people most affected by the incident were iPhone users using the Facebook version of the app. The plug-in said many users using Facebook’s two-factor SMS authentication had trouble logging back in.

Conformable Downdetector, which provides real-time outage information on digital services, thousands of people reported problems with Facebook on Friday. By Saturday, reports had dropped dramatically. At the time of publication, 87% of the most reported issues were related to connection.

Many users who woke up in this situation and used two-factor authentication were finally able to log in again, but often had to wait a while before receiving an SMS code. Some users have had to upload images with their ID to regain access to their account on Engadget.

Although Facebook said it fixed the incident on Saturday, some users still reported that they could not log in. In response, Facebook targeted users report the problem on Twitter to its helpdesk for additional assistance. Curiously, on Twitter Facebook specifically directed users to a help for the iPhone application page, which could support the theory that the iPhone was a problem.

“On January 22, a configuration change caused some people to be disconnected from their Facebook accounts,” Facebook said. USA Today Saturday. “I investigated the problem and fixed it for everyone earlier today. Sorry for the inconvenience. ”

Gizmodo contacted Facebook to ask if it had made any further comments on the matter, given that some users still have trouble connecting to their accounts.

“We are aware that some people are having trouble logging back into their Facebook account after last night. Individual connection issues can vary and we encourage anyone who may have a problem to visit our Help Center for guidance on their specific situation, ”a Facebook spokesman said in an email that included a link to its iPhone app help center page.
