US Southern Command chief to arrive in Caribbean country to attend Caribbean security conference

Admiral Craig Faller, commander of the United States Southern Command, will arrive in the Dominican Republic in the early hours of Tuesday to attend a Caribbean security conference.

The forum is called the Caribbean Nations Security Conference (Cansec) and will run for two days, between Tuesday and Wednesday.

The central theme of this year’s conference will be “Combating illicit trafficking and responding to natural disasters in a COVID scenario”.

Faller is expected to develop an agenda of activities that includes a meeting with the Vice President of the Republic, Raquel Peña, who is responsible for the executive branch in the country in the absence of President Luis Abinader.

Cansec is defined as a forum that allows the heads of public security and defense of countries’ participants to “strengthen ties, discuss regional issues, examine challenges, share lessons learned and explore ways to improve security cooperation and achieve new achievements. It is sponsored annually by the United States Southern Command.

They will personally attend the event, with two representatives, Belize, the United States, France, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic and Suriname.
