US Postal Service Award Contract to Launch Multi-Billion Dollar Upgrade of Postal Delivery Vehicle Fleet

WASHINGTON, February 23, 2021 / PRNewswire / – US Postal Service announces today 10-year contract Oshkosh, WI, headquartered at Oshkosh Defense, to manufacture a new generation of US-built postal delivery vehicles that will drive the most dramatic modernization of the USPS fleet in three decades.

The historic investment is part of a plan that will be launched soon, which the postal service has developed to transform its financial performance and customer service in the next 10 years through significant investments in people, technology and infrastructure, as it tries to become preferred delivery service provider for the American public.

According to the initial contract $ 482 million investment, Oshkosh Defense will complete the production design of the next generation delivery vehicle (NGDV) – a specially built right-hand drive vehicle for the delivery of mail and parcels – and will collect 50,000 to 165,000 of them over 10 years. The vehicles will be equipped with either fuel-efficient internal combustion engines or battery-powered electric propulsion systems and can be adapted to keep pace with advances in electric vehicle technologies. The initial investment includes installation and construction tools for the US production unit where the final assembly of the vehicle will take place.

The contract is the first part of a$ 10-a year-long effort to replace the fleet of postal delivery vehicles, one of the largest in the world. The postal service fleet has more than 230,000 vehicles in each class, including both specially built and commercial shelf-type vehicles (COTS). About 190,000 deliver mail six, and often seven, days a week to every community in the United States. NGDV, along with other COTS vehicles, will replace and expand the current delivery fleet, which includes many vehicles that have been in operation for 30 years.

It is estimated that the first NGDVs will appear on carrier routes in 2023.

“Being the American institution that connects our country, the American postal service can have a bright and modern future if we make investments today that position us to excellence tomorrow,” said the station’s general manager and USPS executive director. Louis DeJoy. “The NGDV program expands our ability to manage a larger package volume and supports our operators with cleaner and more efficient technologies, more facilities and greater comfort and security as it delivers on behalf of the American people every day. ”

NGDV vehicles will include air conditioning and heating, improved ergonomics and some of the vehicle’s most advanced technologies – including 360-degree cameras, advanced braking and traction control, airbags, a front and rear collision avoidance system. rear that includes visual, audio warning and automatic braking. Vehicles will also have increased load capacity to maximize efficiency and better accommodate higher package volumes resulting from the growth of e-commerce.

“The modernization of our fleet also reflects the commitment of the postal service to a more environmentally sustainable mix of vehicles,” said DeJoy. “As we operate one of the largest civilian government fleets in the world, we are committed to pursuing short- and long-term opportunities to reduce our impact on the environment.”

The postal service awarded the Oshkosh defense contract in accordance with competitive policies for the procurement of postal services, after extensive testing of prototype vehicles, evaluation of production proposals offered and discussions with technical specifications with bidders.

The award is an indefinite, indefinite quantity (IDIQ) delivery contract, which means that, after an initial commitment in dollars, the Postal Service will have the continued ability to order more NGDV for a period of time set, in this case, by 10 years. Oshkosh Defense is evaluating which of the most production locations in the US is best suited to potentially increase the production rate of NGDV.

The postal service does not receive any tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of mail, products and services to finance its operations.
