UP: 3 elderly women shot for rabies instead of Covid vaccine, pharmacist suspended

Three elderly women received a rabies vaccine on Thursday instead of a Covid-19 blow at a health center in Shamli district on Thursday, officials said on Friday.

An outpatient pharmacist (OPD) at the Kandla Community Health Center, where rabies is administered, was suspended on Friday, while another pharmacist was fired, officials said. A warning was sent to the unit’s medical superintendent.

District Magistrate (DM) Jasjit Kaur said: “An investigation has been ordered following the incident. The report said the three women went to the health center to get the Covid shot. But instead of going to the Covid vaccination center on the first floor, they reached the general OPD. The pharmacist on duty had left for essential work and had assigned his job of administering the rabies vaccine to a private person, who is a pharmacist of Jan Aushadhi Kendra. The person injected the three women with the rabies vaccine without checking any paperwork. ”

She added: “Based on the survey report, the CMO [Chief Medical Officer] he received instructions to suspend the pharmacist and the medical director of the hospital was warned. The service of employee Jan Aushadhi Kendra was interrupted. ”

CMO, Dr. Sanjay Agarwal, said: “The anti-rabies shot is given every Monday and Thursday at the OPD. The Covid vaccination unit takes place in a separate place on the first floor of the health center. The women went to the OPD and asked for the vaccine. ”

The three women were identified as Saroj (70), Anarkali (72) and Satyavati (62). Anarkali told reporters: “I went to get the crown vaccine and they injected the dog vaccine. I’m dizzy and have a headache. When I asked if I should send my Aadhaar card, they told me there was no need. Then they said it was a vaccine for a dog’s bite. ”

According to the letter of complaint filed with CMO Agarwal, Saroj also complained of nausea and was taken to a private doctor. “The doctor checked their medical record stating that he had been given the rabies vaccine,” the letter said.
