Print Screen: The magic castle

In 1998, a small team of Japanese developers spent eight months working on a game called The magic castle, which they sent as a pitch to seven major publishers, including Sony. It never went anywhere, but thanks to the emulators and efforts of one of the original teams, now we can play it and enjoy it anyway.

One of the team members, PIROWO, recently found the source code for the project –created on Net Yaroze– and decided to tie his free heads and release them to the public. This game looks great, not only for its isometric style, but also for a number of very modern touches, such as a custom interface and dynamic music.

This video comes from a VHS that the team first created in “98 to accompany the pitch, which Sony loved, but then blew and asking the developers to give up The magic castle and work on something else, which they were not very keen to do.

For more information on the background of the game, Net Yaroze Europe have an interview with two of the original developers where I talk about things like how they came to play the game with another “company that makes famous Japanese RPGs”, but then that it fell apart and.

You can download the game here.
