GENEVA – United Nations human rights experts on Monday issued a devastating critique of a race report published last month by the British government, accusing its perpetrators of repackaging racist troops, distorting history and normalizing white supremacy.
“In 2021, it is amazing to read a report on race and ethnicity that repackages racist troops and stereotypes into reality, turning data and misapplying statistics and studies into conclusive conclusions and ad hominem attacks on people of African descent,” the Working Group said. UN experts on people of African descent said in a statement that it was endorsed by another UN expert monitoring contemporary forms of racism.
The British report, which was commissioned by Prime Minister Boris Johnson in response to the outpouring of protests following the assassination of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer, concluded that Britain did not suffer from institutional racism and instead offered “a model for other whites – majority countries. ”
Racism still exists, but discrimination in Britain, he argued, was more the result of socio-economic inequities than skin color.
The five-member group of the United Nations, chaired by an American lawyer and rights activist Dominique Day, which includes human rights experts from the Caribbean, Africa and Asia, said the report was based on dubious evidence to rationalize supremacy. white and ignored the findings of other UN Panels and human rights experts.
He agreed that racial disparities cannot always stem from racism or racial discrimination, but said “there is also convincing evidence that the roots of these disparities lie in institutional racism and structural discrimination, as they do not clearly reflect preferences or the priorities of communities facing structural disadvantage. “
The group urged the British government to categorically reject its commission’s findings, warning that its historical distortions and falsehoods “could further authorize racism, the promotion of negative racial stereotypes and racial discrimination”.
