Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the CDC, confirmed that the UK strain of Covid-19 is now the most common version of the virus in the US. She believes that this is leading to a recent increase in cases, especially among young people. The British strain is considered more transmissible. Daily Covid-19 Minute: CDC Travel GuidelinesThe CDC now says people who are completely vaccinated against Covid-19 can travel safely to the United States. The agency now has evidence that fully vaccinated people are less likely to receive Covid-19 and spread it to others. Vaccinated travelers should not be tested for covid before or after the trip and should not self-quarantine on return home. Some precautions are still in place, and the CDC says even vaccinated people should wear a mask, stand six feet away from others, and wash their hands often. This also applies to fully vaccinated people. That means it’s been two weeks since the second hit for Pfizer and Moderna or two weeks since your Johnson & Johnson launch.
Eye On Detroit – CongregationThe existing structure was built in 1924 after a small chapel for the congregation of St. Luke’s Evangelical Church was set on fire and burned to the ground in 1917. It took several years after the fire for the congregation to obtain funding because of wartime prices. Eventually, the property fell into the hands of the Home Mission Board and the Church Extension Society of the United Lutheran Church in America. From there, they endeavored to secure funding for the erection of the church structure that stands here today. It was built by Spier and Gehrke Architects to become the Unity English Lutheran Church. This church is the true test of time. At a block north of the 1967 Rebellion, the church remained intact and undisturbed. At one point, between 1950 and 1960, the original stained glass window was removed and blocked. The purpose of restoring and renovating the structure was to install a modern interpretation of what was once there. The new functional window installed in early 2020 is a piece of stainless steel built by the Nordin Brothers of Detroit. While the interior of the building remained structurally the same, the Congregation focused on preserving the integrity, historical details, and finishes of the space. Great efforts have been made to restore all the original double-hung stained glass windows, the original maple floor and a 150-year-old organ to ensure that the interior retains its original church feel. The organ, a major focal point of the interior, originally built by Samuel Russell Warren around 1870 for St. Thomas Belleville, Ontario and rebuilt by Casavant in the early 1900s, is still high in the northwest corner of the main room. He made his way to this Detroit building sometime in the 1940s or 1950s.
