One of Sony PlayStation most recognized franchises may soon burst and explode on TV. Twisted metal, the chaotic SF demolition derby game, is adapted for the small screen from the writers of dead Pool movie, and one of the writers from Cobra Kai.
The idea for a Twisted metal the show began to percolate in 2019, and now writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (Dead Pool, Zombieland) teamed up with Michael Jonathan Smith (Cobra Kai) to break the case. Reese and Wernick will co-produce with Smith, who will write and show the show.
Conformable variety, who broke the news, the story follows “a stranger with a motor mouth who is offered a chance at a better life, but only if he can successfully deliver a mysterious package in a post-apocalyptic wilderness. With the help of a happy car thief, he will face savage robbers who drive destruction vehicles and other dangers of the open road, including a disturbed clown … who drives a truck too frozen ice cream, on which fans of the game will be known as Sweet Tooth. Will to Arnett Electric Avenue production company is also on board.
Twisted metal debuted in 1995 with the launch of the first PlayStation and has been a staple of the platform ever since. While each game has its own variation in the story, the main game mode is usually just an unrestricted demolition derby between all sorts of themed vehicles and driven by people with unique, sinister personalities. But instead of breaking into each other, vehicles have weapons and bombs and all sorts of destructive capabilities. The last vehicle standing wins.

“We love Twisted Metal iIn all its twisted madness, “said Glenn Adilman, executive vice president of comedy development for Sony Pictures Television. “Michael Jonathan Smith left the park with an action-packed, brilliant, funny adaptation and we are grateful for the support of Rhett, Paul, Will and our PlayStation friends.”
There’s no word on a chronology for the show or any hint of casting (Variety points out that while Arnett might express Sweet Tooth, there’s no business yet), but with streaming consuming content like Truckasaurus, you’d imagine this will land somewhere sooner than later.
