Trump’s impeachment trial will be interrupted on the Jewish Sabbath

The impeachment process against former President Donald Trump will be halted as it approaches the Sabbath to accommodate a request from one of his lawyers, who is an observant Jew.

Trump’s impeachment attorney David Schoen asked if the trial – which begins Tuesday – be temporarily suspended from Sunset Friday through Saturday.

“I apologize for the inconvenience that my request that impeachment proceedings not be conducted on the Jewish Sabbath will undoubtedly involve other people in the proceedings,” Schoen wrote in a letter to senate leaders last week.

However, the practices and prohibitions are mandatory for me; so, respectfully, I have no choice but to make this request. “

Majority leader Chuck Schumer said on Sunday that the Senate would grant Schoen’s request.

“We respect their request and will of course comply. Discussions with the parties involved about the design of the trial are continuing, ”said Schumer spokesperson Angelo Roefaro.
