Trevor Noah opened his first Daily show of the week on Monday with a vigorous rebuke of the latest police murder of an unarmed black man to shake the country over the past 24 hours. And he began by noting that the supposedly “accidental” shooting took place in the same town where the Derek Chauvin murder case (about the murder of George Floyd) is now entering its third week.
“It’s just about everything you need to know that even while the trial is underway,” said the host, “protests are raging in Minneapolis over the murder of another unarmed black man, Daunte Wright.”
After setting out the details of the shooting, in which the officer allegedly thought she was pulling her taser but ‘accidentally’ grabbed her gun, Noah fired back, ‘You’re fucking kidding.’
“Does that even have to be a legitimate excuse?” he asked. And while he did not say that “tragic mistakes will never happen,” Noah argued that “maybe if the police didn’t draw a gun so quickly, maybe people wouldn’t die because of Agent Urkel’s confusion about this.”
From there, he pointed out how “great” it is that “agents think everything is a gun except their own.” They claim to see guns instead of cell phones and wallets, but their own gun is “not a gun.”
Noah later drew attention to another case of police brutality, in which officers in Virginia sprayed pepper spray with a uniformed Army lieutenant for no apparent reason during a traffic stop, telling him to “ be scared ” and that he was “ about to ” to ride the lightning. “
“This is screwed up!” said the host, echoing Second Lieutenant Caron Nazario. And please don’t forget, this is how the police treated one of the troops while wearing his uniform. No hoodie, no wide pants, so what’s the excuse this time around? “
“If a black man in military uniform cannot receive humane treatment from the police, what chance does every other black person in America have?” he asked. “But if you are surprised that a member of the military is being violated, then you have to understand that the police don’t care.”
The “reason they don’t care,” explained Noah, “is because they know they can get away with it. And until that changes, they just won’t care.”
