Travel demand will not return until late summer due to slowdown in vaccinations against Covid

The slow launch of the Covid-19 vaccines will prolong a long-awaited recovery in travel demand by mid to late summer, Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun said on Wednesday.

The aircraft manufacturer recorded a record annual net loss for 2020, as the pandemic pushed airlines to stop or reduce plans to add new aircraft to their fleets. Governments around the world have imposed strict travel restrictions in 2020, and future passengers have abandoned vacation and business travel.

“I think we all hoped the distribution of the vaccine would go a little easier,” Calhoun said in an interview with CNBC’s “Squawk on the Street.”

Calhoun said demand for both leisure and business travel is expected to be strong with the vaccination of several people, but the process will take several more months.
