Mayor Bill de Blasio is still facing heat – and not just from Andy Cohen – as he danced with his wife in Times Square at the start of New Year’s Day after the audience was banned from gathering there due to COVID-19 restrictions.
The mayor became an easy target after office tweeted a clip of the Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray moving onstage to Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York” after the ball hit the Crossroads of the World in 2021.

You have essentially always been the worst political in modern history – but you closed NYC [and] Having your own private party in Times Square is really * kissing chefs * the most tone-deaf I’ve ever seen a mayor do. Everyone hates your DeBlasio, ”McCain tweeted.
Another woman accused de Blasio on Twitter of this “Openly mocking New Yorkers who are not allowed to be in Times Square while dancing in the space created by restricting the rig.”
And a third Twitter user said, “Complete lack of self-awareness. Embarrassing. “
On early New Year’s Day, Cohen seemed to kick off the criticism of the Blasio, by first taking down a shot of tequila live on CNN.
“That’s how I felt when I just saw Mayor de Blasio dance,” he said. “I just don’t need to see that in early 2021,” Cohen said.
A Blasio spokesman brushed aside the insult from Fox News.
“Not the first time I’ve heard a drunk person complain about someone’s dance moves,” a representative told the outlet.
Times Square looked like a ghost town on Thursday night, the first time in 114 years that the New Year’s Eve spectacle was staged without the general public in attendance.
De Blasio and McCray attended the low-key party to start the traditional ball drop at midnight.
Artists and several hundred first responders were also allowed in the area.
