Tomorrow we will see the “Cold Moon”, the last full month of the year and the decade

Puerto Rico Astronomical Society Inc. (SAPR) reported that next Tuesday, December 29, we will have the last full moon of 2020, also known as the “Cold Moon”.

“The cold moon appears near the solstice (winter in the northern hemisphere), the days are shorter. It is also known as the moon of long nights. It marks the beginning of the northern hemisphere winter, ”said Professor César M. López, secretary of SAPR and president of OCCAE (an independent entity affiliated to SAPR).

The reader will notice that there are 13 months with full phase during the 12 months, responding to the fact that the cycle of the phases of the moon, from the new moon to the new moon, lasts less than a month (29.53 days), October had two months full year, was 366 days, being the jump.

“The cold moon, in addition to being the last in 2020, is also the last decade and can be seen with the naked eye in the sky of the island and around the world,” López added in a written statement.

SAPR invited those fans of astronomy to show their astronomical photos taken with the help of cameras and telescopes through its Facebook page.
