“Tom and Jerry”: fun, nostalgic and full of lessons

Based on the characters created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, the duo “Tom and Jerry” returns to the big screen with a movie full of action and big hearts.

Located in New York, Tom and Jerry start bringing their fans up to date with the friend-enemy couple. As it turns out, they’re both homeless on the streets of Manhattan now. On the one hand, the mouse “Jerry” is on a mission to find a new place to live. While, on the other hand, the cunning cat “Tom” continues to do his job to survive in the big city. But only after “Jerry” discovers and spoils that evil plan of “Tom”, the revival of the rivalry we all know and love.

The film begins to become even more fun and action-packed when the mischievous mouse decides to move to the most prestigious hotel in town. The place where the young “Kayla”, played by Chloë Grace Moretz (Addams Family), just got a job after cheating and manipulating the hotel manager. Just some of the qualities that this character shares with our beloved protagonists, in addition to the fact that he is the only person able to understand them. Now, in a desperate need to get “Jerry” out of the hotel before the most important wedding of the century takes place, “Kayla” returns to “Tom” to get rid of him together. Unleashing more chaos, violence and destruction, because only these two classic characters know how to deliver.

Directed by Tim Story (Fantastic Four) and produced by Christopher DeFaria (The Lego Movie 2), the film pays homage to the cartoons by keeping them in 2D animation, as well as with the ability to communicate only through gestures and facial expressions. However, sharing the plot and screen time with the rest of the cast did not help them reach their full potential. Of course, this does not mean that the film is fun, nostalgic and full of lessons, especially about unity. Something that both characters rarely share on screen. But let’s be honest, we like it the most when they live a miserable life, that makes them feel the most fun.

Chloë Grace Moretz, Michael Peña, Rob Delaney, Colin Jost and Ken Jeong star in the story directed by Tim Story.

Tom and Jerry open tomorrow in theaters and on the HBO Max streaming platform.
