There is at least one voice that opposes the requirement in the potential of the Jets to search for Deshaun Watson.
While the general consensus is that trading for Watson would be a franchise-changing move for the Jets, a prominent analyst suggested that the Texan star defender could only be “a little better” than the Jets already have in Sam Darnold.
“For me, it just doesn’t make sense. I don’t think you’re getting a huge upgrade, “ESPN analyst Todd McShay said last week on the network’s” First Draft “podcast.” If I’m the number 2 plane, I’m telling you, you know what? McShay went on to note that the Jets could get even more venture capital if they stayed with Darnold and changed option no. 2 with a team that needs a defender. He also pointed out that the Jets could go a long way in helping Darnold, supporting the offensive line, adding a wide receiver that changes the game and a young back running, plus giving him a strong defense.
All of this would certainly help Darnold, 23, but it might not put him in Watson’s stratosphere. While Darnold has shown flashbacks to what could be his first three seasons in the NFL, the 25-year-old Watson has consistently proven the star has gone through four seasons.
Watson, a three-time Pro Bowler, completed 67.8% of his passes for 14,539 yards, 104 touchdowns and 36 interceptions while rushing for 1,677 yards and 17 touchdowns. In 16 fewer games of the regular season, Darnold completed 59.8% of his passes for 8,097 yards, 45 touchdowns and 39 interceptions while rushing for 417 yards and five touchdowns.
“Certainly, Sam has a job to do as a defender and he still makes some young mistakes. But I’d rather have all these capital projects than make a deal that I give up some of these choices to go get a Deshaun Watson or make Sam and bring a novice quarterback to Justin Fields, which was inconsistent. .
