“Tijuana Shrek”, from animation to reality for the common good


In the Tijuana is Hugo García, a man who has been searching the streets for 10 years for the food of his house in a unique and original way: disguised as the animated character “Shrek”, with whom he also intends to help society.

Painted in green and with the typical clothing that distinguishes the animation ogre, Hugo goes out on the streets, going around every corner to take pictures with the curious who approach him, he also participates in social events.

He is called “Shrek of Tijuana” and not only shares joy with his followers, but also with his own family, as an idea to personify this character. arose from the need to raise funds for medical treatments and chemotherapy for his wife.

He acknowledged that it is the population that provides material aid, from money to pantries, which when accumulated decides to share with those most in need, such as shelters, orphanages and communities abandoned by the authorities.

The inspiration for Hugo García, he said, is his wife and health, as well as his daughter, who sometimes supports him and dresses in Fiona, Shrek’s faithful partner according to the DreamWorks story.

García not only seeks to earn a living by character, but also to bring a human sense to the community, because during the health emergency he donated face masks, diapers, pantry, clothes and even the kitchens of those who need it.

“A few minutes ago I gave more than 60 diapers to children who also miss the little things and thank the people who support me, who come from the United States and take things home to me to donate,” he said.

He recalled that he also offered help to those who lost their homes due to natural phenomena such as fires, rains, landslides, among others.

“Now that the houses have been burned in (in the neighborhood) El Rubí, we give toys, we give food, we give TVs, there in the El Niño neighborhood, we give joy there in the La Miseria neighborhood, because there is nothing, there is no light, there is no water, nothing, ”he said.

Hugo García is one of thousands of Tijuana residents looking for food from home every day, but he does it differently and has been seen several times with high-level politicians, accompanying them to social events as well. with some artists and sports figures visiting Tijuana.

It is common to see “Tijuana Shrek” walking through the Urban Area of ​​the Tijuana River, Revolution Boulevard, international landmarks, the Municipal Palace or the Center, always accessing a photo and offering sweets to the children who greet it.
