Thousands of drivers drive on the national highways despite closures

SAN ANTONIO – Drivers all over the state are advised to stay off the state highways and city streets as the slippery road conditions linger and are in danger of deteriorating when night falls.

While some parts of the city may seem deserted, others are just as busy as ever.

Officials say they want to keep highways and city streets reserved for first responders and essential travel.

On Tuesday, the parking lot of the LaCantera mall was practically empty, but near 1604 and Interstate Highway 10, traffic flowed at normal speeds on Tuesday.

Traffic was also seen on Interstate 35 and other state highways in our area, which is a problem, officials say.

“That is part of our winter weather operations that we are now conducting. The crews are also heading out to prepare for tonight, as we direct all traffic from the freeway to the front facade, ”said Jennifer Serold, an information officer with the Texas Department of Transportation. We want to make sure those pre-roads are covered and ready for that rain tonight. “

While some local state highways may look safe and some driveways will not be barricaded, Serold said she wanted to emphasize that they are all closed to the public for a major reason.

Unnecessary travel in the city streets is discouraged. City transportation officers who release the following statement:

“The Public Works Department continues to support the San Antonio Police Department, who are leading the emergency response to this unprecedented San Antonio winter storm,” the city said in a statement to KSAT. “Currently our focus is on city bridges, viaducts and major intersections. The Public Works Department also ensures that hospitals are accessible and that San Antonio firefighters can leave their stations to respond to emergency calls. “
