Those who aspire to be a presidential candidate for PLD

After a meeting of almost seven hours, the Political Committee of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) reported yesterday the possible candidates for the presidency of the Republic of that political organization, for the 2024 elections.

So far, seven have presented their intentions, according to PLD General Secretary Charles Mariotti, who added that the issue was dealt with superficially during the meeting.

However, the former senator from Monte Plata clarified that they are “aspiring presidential candidates”, that the status of the purple party provides that candidates must be approved through the Central Committee.

Even so, he revealed that so far those who have taken the first step have been the former minister of public works and the last candidate for the presidency of the PLD, Gonzalo Castillo; former Vice President Margarita Cedeño and Santiago Mayor Abel Martínez.

Similarly, Mariotti mentioned former Environment Minister Francisco Domínguez Brito, former Labor Minister Maritza Hernández and former education ministers Andrés Navarro and Carlos Amarante Baret.

But the list is not final, as the Political Committee has assured that the “renewal process” of the PLD is still very young, so that names can be added further to the group of applicants.

“They are not all they are and they are all they are,” Mariotti said.

The committee referred to possible candidacies in a previous meeting, when the PLD secretary assured that those aspiring to the presidential candidacy should meet with him and the party president, Danilo Medina.

“Stakeholders need to meet with the party president and the secretary general, so the guidelines are outlined so as not to contradict the process of transformation and reorganization to choose the new middle authorities and party bases,” Mariotti explained in mid-month March.
