The Senate approved a resolution ordering the Commission on Human Rights and Labor Affairs to investigate what measures and / or protocols have been implemented in the Puerto Rico Police Bureau, the Department of Justice and the Office of the Court Administration to ensure that crimes motivated by the gender identity or sexual orientation of victims of crime should be classified and treated in accordance with such circumstances, as well as any other initiative that guarantees dignified treatment for victims and promotes greater institutional awareness.

This is Senate Resolution 78, written by Senators María de Lourdes Santiago, Rafael Bernabe, Ana Irma Rivera Lassen, Ada García Montes and Rubén Soto Rivera.

“This measure translates into hate crimes. It will be possible to know what can be done and what cannot be done. The entire justice system would benefit from this investigation to work on the issue of hate crimes, “said Rivera Lassén.
