He had been missing since Friday before the election, the deputy for the department, Reynaldo Cardoza, is asking for prompt justice and to rule out the fact that it is a political crime.
The candidate for mayor of Nueva Trinidad in Chalatenango, for the PCN party, Concepción Varela, who was found dead today, disappeared on Friday, February 26, two days before the municipal and legislative elections.
Reynaldo Cardoza, deputy for PCN from the Chalatenango department, states that on Thursday they summoned the candidates to deliver the credentials, the payment money, the food and the vests that the guards would use on February 28, election day, Varela he did not answer the call.
“I sent for him on Saturday (February 26) and the family just said he was gone, but they didn’t even tell him where he was,” says Cardoza.

Varela has been a member of the party for a year, according to the deputy, and was highly motivated by the community.
The candidate did not show up to collect credentials and news on Friday, February 26, before the election.
“Every time I called him to a meeting, he was always looking, he went from house to house delivering food,” said the deputy.
The candidate’s family, who was engaged in agricultural activities, was calm in the face of his disappearance, stating that he was used to leaving without saying where he was going.
“I went to look for him with another man and the only thing they told us was that he was not at home,” said the parliamentarian’s security agent, Enrique Zelaya.
Varela, who was already found in a state of decay today, was apparently hanged, but it is not confirmed whether it was a suicide or a homicide.
Deputy Cardoza demands prompt justice for the case, so that the authorities reach the bottom of the problem and exclude that it is a “political crime”.

“He already had everything organized, the people who were going to be at the table, JEM (Municipal Electoral Council),” the parliamentarian said.
The decomposing body of Concepción Varela was found yesterday, Friday, March 5, between the villages of El Sitio and Manaquil.
Varela, who is described by locals as a humble and responsible young man, has received death threats, according to those close to him.
Varela’s body was recognized by his relatives in the clothes and objects found on the spot, because it was in an advanced state of decomposition. Authorities have begun investigations.
