They are trying to bring forward the official start date of the hurricane season

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is on track to petition to change the official start date of the hurricane season from June 1 to May 15.

The World Meteorological Organization will hold its annual committee meeting next month and the agenda will have to approve the start of the hurricane season by two weeks or not.

According to the committee’s agenda, the change would be based on the fact that during the last nine hurricane seasons, seven tropical storms formed on the date from May 15 to June 1.

“These systems are a problem for humans because they are usually formed close to the ground at irregular times, and can lead to the misconception that they are early, rare and insignificant,” the document says.

Experts explain that messages from the National Meteorology System (SNM) usually warn the population to prepare for the start of the season, but “the current time of the season is not the most favorable for efforts to prepare, because these early storms could be dangerous. “

According to the proposal, there have been at least 20 direct deaths since 2012 from storms that occurred in late May and up to 200 million damage has been recorded.

Given this, the NHC understands that a partial remedy is to bring forward hurricane season in the Atlantic, and that the agency would issue storm bulletins 15 days earlier than usual.
