Tacoma – Protesters in Washington state lit a large bonfire, damaged buildings and marched with signs Sunday night in response to an incident the previous day in which a police car rammed into a crowd, injuring at least two.
Protesters gathered at the intersection in Tacoma, where the car rushed to a group of pedestrians Saturday night while responding to a street race warning. Videos of the scene were widely shared on the Internet and seemed to show that the car was passing at least one person.
The two injured went to hospitals with injuries that were not life-threatening. One of the people has been fired, according to the media.
Protesters gathered in a park on Sunday and marched through the city center, smashing windows and painting messages on various buildings. People set up objects to barricade a street and set fire to a large dumpster. The protesters also passed the Pierce County jail.
There were no reports of injuries after the protest, according to a police tweet, which indicated the march was spread around 11 p.m.
The officer involved in Saturday’s incident is a 58-year-old man who has been with the department for 29 1/2 years, according to Tacoma police. He was surrounded by a crowd after arriving at the alleged street race. People started hitting the body of the car and the officer feared for his safety. The officer marched through the crowd, then stopped to seek medical attention, police said.
The agent was left on administrative leave with pay.
The protesters told the media they wanted the agent fired and criticized the city for what they saw as a lack of transparency.
The Tacoma Police Community Advisory Committee hosted a virtual meeting on Monday to address the incident.
The Pierce County Investigation Team was investigating the incident. According to The Seattle Times, the team was made up of officers from various parts of the county and community representatives.
When police observed the protest, three people climbed on the roof of a downtown building. Two were armed with a short weapon and knives and were arrested. The third fled, according to the police.
Tacoma is located approximately 30 miles south of Seattle.
