Ghosts’ n Goblins creator Tokuro Fujiwara recently shared an amazing factoid in the development of the Capcom platform: an iconic boxer with Arthur’s heart patterns is actually covered in strawberries. Okay, maybe my mind is blowing.
“I have to share with you a very important detail that people may not know: the model on her underwear is actually strawberries,” Fujiwara said. Polygon. “Arthur has that harsh air when he wears his armor, but inside he gets a little fanciful and wears his favorite boxers.”
Since Ghosts’ n Goblins debuted in arcades in 1985, players widely accepted that Arthur’s underwear throughout the series was heart-shaped. But the same White Magician’s coat Final Fantasy III, hardware limitations have probably contributed to this discrepancy between what the developers intend and what the players have interpreted on the screen.
Looking back, the tiny, red blobs on Arthur’s boxers could be just about anything, and the strawberry pattern becomes obvious only in concept art. It certainly didn’t help that Capcom used heart boxers in 2001 Maximo: Ghosts to Glory, a spiritual successor to the classic Ghosts’ n Goblins series and its continuation since 2003 Maximo vs. Army of Zin. Hearts appeared right in A Awakening of the dead Easter egg.

Funny enough, the truth has been there for a while. Arthur’s biography in both Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 and Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 of 2011 mentions “boxers with strawberry print”. They can be seen even during the game after his golden super armor ends, but those games are probably a little too chaotic to be very careful about something so minor.
“However, his underwear is not just something he likes to wear,” Fujiwara explained in his time. Polygon interview. “It was actually a gift from the princess and acts as a ‘charm’ to protect Arthur in battle. It is probably safe to say that the design of the strawberries was something the princess liked. ”
Oh, and in case you’re wondering, there’s no doubt that Arthur’s boxers are shaped like strawberries. Ghosts’ n Goblins Resurrection, a storybook-style remaster of the original 1985 release on Switch on February 25th. I don’t know about you, but I’ve been thinking of them as hearts for so long that I’m not sure what to say about the truth. If you have to talk, I’m here.
