Of the 184 “adverse events” to vaccination COVID-19 registered in Puerto Rico, the Health Department referred to two things Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) after people died shortly after receiving one of the doses.
The director of Vaccination program from the desk, Iris Cardona, clarified that both deaths – which correspond to a 77-year-old man and a 79-year-old man – are being investigated and at this time there is no conclusive information that the administration of the vaccines caused the deaths.
“To date, none of these events have been identified as being a product, directly related to the vaccine. It’s under investigation and the final report comes from the CDC and the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), who are the ones conducting this surveillance, ”Cardona explained in a press conference.

The former Secretary of Health emphasized that both people suffered from several comorbid conditions and that the 77-year-old man’s case was diagnosed with Covid-19 in a test conducted after his death.
“The person was vaccinated in a healthcare facility and was ill and the diagnosis on the death certificate is that he died of Covid-19. There is no way that the vaccine can cause the Covid-19 infection, so we assumed she was already sick. We must await the report responsibly, ”said Cardona.
“He is vaccinated and dies within 24 hours, but he had a positive test, clinical picture and plates that are compatible with Covid-19. He had shown no symptoms (at the time of vaccination), ”said Cardona.
According to Cardona, the person suffered from a number of chronic conditions, including type 2 diabetes, polymyalgia, hypertension, pacemakers, and cardiovascular disease.
“They are older people who get vaccinated. Inside of the screening (screening) that happened, they had no fever, nothing. I don’t have the absolute details on how they agree to vaccination, but I had Covid-19, ”added the pediatric infectious agent.
The 79-year-old man also had a diabetic picture, as well as immunosuppressed as a result of “a previous immunodeficiency”.
In the second case: “we do not have a diagnostic test (for Covid-19), there is no definitive diagnosis. He felt bad, arrived at the hospital and died, ”said Cardona.
“There is no cause-and-effect relationship that the system tells us this is so,” the physician stressed.
The two deaths under investigation represent 0.0000035% of the 567,813 doses of the vaccine administered in Puerto Rico and registered by the Department of Health, or one of every 300,000 vaccines used.
Cardona explained that currently only 13, or 7% of the 184 side effects of the vaccine, are classified as serious. Of the total, 147 have also been reported in women, in 80% of the cases.
137 of the side effects have meanwhile occurred after the administration of the Pfizer, while the remaining 37 match the vaccine from Modern
The number of side effects represents 0.00033% of the doses administered, or one in every 3000 vaccines.
About 7 million side effects have been recorded in the United States, according to Cardona.
