The Yankees give Domingo German a second chance after suspension

Domingo German is set to receive another chance with the Yankees after serving a suspension for violating domestic violence protocols in the Major League Baseball.

Aaron Boone said on Wednesday that he, general manager Brian Cashman and bank coach Carlos Mendoza had spoken to the German “receiving him back” from his ban, but added that he would not be guaranteed anything this spring.

“We know he paid a significant price in terms of his career, as he missed a full season, plus now,” the manager said in a Zoom call from Tampa. “It simply came to our notice then. We feel that he is in a good place and now it is up to him to go out and revive his career and compete for a place in this team. … It’s been a very long year. ”

The Yankees need as many quality weapons as possible to support Gerrit Cole, and if the German can regain the form he had in 2019, when he won 18 games and threw 143 innings before his suspension, it would give a boost.

But the German must prove that he can still be effective on the mound – and stay away from trouble on the field. He was suspended for 81 games in January 2020 for violating protocol and missed all last season and announced he would leave baseball – although he later took it back and threw during the winter ball in the Dominican Republic.

“Certainly nothing was promised,” Boone said of German’s role on the team. “We will be there and we will try to be supported, because we can go further to not only hope to get the most out of it on the mound and between the lines, but also to become the best he can get out of the field. . ”
