Xbox Series X has just received a healthy graphics update. It’s all due to AMD’s “FidelityFX” technology, which has just been added to the X-Series and Xbox S-Series game development kits (via VideoCardz).
This not only means that state-of-the-art Xbox consoles can now get similar graphics enhancements to AMD-powered PCs, but it gives the Xbox Series X a major boost over the PS5.
FidelityFX is a piece of AI-powered software that can provide a number of adaptive graphics enhancements for developers to include in their games. This includes variable shading, image clarity, ambient occlusion, screen space reflections, and more.
The idea is that the visual of a game can get a significant upgrade, without sacrificing game performance in the process. This will be especially useful for the Xbox Series S, which is notable for having less impressive hardware than the larger and more powerful X Series.
Unfortunately, since FidelityFX has just been added to Xbox development kits, it will be some time before you can experience all of its benefits. After all, the development of the game takes time, even if the developers decide that it is worthwhile to retroactively add FidelityFX enhancements to the previously released titles.
There is no talk of FidelityFX coming to the PS5, which will disappoint people with the good fortune to take over the latest Sony console. But this does not mean that it will never happen.
Especially since the PS5 uses AMD hardware similar to the Xbox Series X, packaged in a 3.5 GHz Zen 2 processor and a 10.28 teraflop RDNA 2 GPU. So it’s not like there are hardware compatibility issues to worry about.
It will all depend on AMD and Sony reaching an agreement and ensuring that PS5 development kits can access the same technology. Hopefully it will happen sooner rather than later. Especially with all the great PS5 exclusive titles on the way.
