The women are accused of attacking the US Flint mail carrier

FLINT, Michigan (WJRT) – Federal and local investigations are underway after two women attacked a US postal carrier in Flint on Thursday.

The alleged attack took place on Floyd McCree Drive, between the River Village and Schafer Square apartment complexes. The Flint Police Department is investigating with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, which is the postal service’s law enforcement agency.

A spectator recorded a video of the attack around 13:30 on Thursday. It appears that her family members intervened to help the postman while two other women were holding her down, pulling her hair in the process.

One of the alleged attackers can be heard shouting: “She hit me first” on the video. Then, the video shows the two women getting back in the car and speeding. The man filming the attack took a look at the damage to the front of the mail truck before filming ended.

“You know, you get a video and it’s always useful, but you never tell the whole story, because you never know when the camcorder was turned on, what happened before, what happened after it was turned off. So there are still some unanswered questions there, “said Genesee County Attorney David Leyton.

The Flint Police Department has arrested at least one woman in connection with the incident. Leyton is awaiting answers to some questions before deciding whether to file criminal charges in this case.

He said the postal worker involved in the incident was treated and released from a local hospital for several cuts. He expects to fully recover.

The postal carrier failed to complete its route, which is a big problem for the postal service. Their motto says that even the severe weather does not stop their work.

Investigators are still analyzing the damage to the mail truck.

“We are trying to decide what happened when. What came first, the chicken or the egg – the collapse or the assault – and why it happened. And if there was an accident, how did that happen, ”Leyton said. “So all of this is still under investigation.”

Authorities do not know clearly what is the relationship between the women accused of assaulting the postal operator.

The National Association of Letter Carriers, which is the union of postal service employees, could not be reached for comment Friday. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service issued the following statement on Friday, stating that the attack had nothing to do with incentive checks:

“The safety and well-being of postal service employees is a top priority for the US Postal Inspection Service, the federal law enforcement branch of the US Postal Service. Postal inspectors are aware of the incident involving a postal service employee. In such incidents, we work closely with our law enforcement partners and prosecutors, in this case the Flint Police Department, the Flint County Attorney’s Office, and the United States Attorney’s Office, to resolve these crimes and determine the best course of action. for criminal prosecution. There is no indication that this incident is related to the disbursement of payments with economic impact. The investigation is ongoing. ”
