The Toronto Blue Jays place Julian Merryweather closer to the 10-day IL with an oblique stem

DUNEDIN, Florida – Near the Toronto Blue Jays, Julian Merryweather was placed on the list of the 10 injured days, with a tense left oblique.

The left-hander felt discomfort in the left side of his abdomen in his last warm-up pitch in the eighth round of Tuesday night’s 7-3 victory over the New York Yankees.

Merryweather came in with two runners and two outs and threw just two pitches to Aaron Hicks before Gary Sanchez was tagged in a rundown between first and second base after a dirty pitch. He did not return for the ninth.

Merryweather has two saves and allowed only one shot and a walk with seven shots over 4⅓ innings in four appearances. His fast ball hit 100.4 mph this season.

Ross Stripling was also scratched from Wednesday’s scheduled start against the Yankees due to a tight right forearm. He could not be released before the match.

TJ Zeuch replaced Stripling.

Game Notes: RHP David Phelps, hit in the lower back by Clint Frazier’s 100.7 mph line on Tuesday night, is daily with his back bruised. … RHP Anthony Castro bought his contract from the alternative site and it will work from bullpen.
