The Super Smash Bros. DLC. Ultimate keeps the fan theories debating

So far, three of the DLC characters from Fighter’s Pass Vol. 2 have been revealed for Super Smash Bros. last on the Nintendo Switch. In the two years since the game’s release, many fan theories have been invented to find out how Nintendo chooses the game’s DLC fighters, but Vol. 2 has proven to be quite difficult to guess who could make the cut. A number of these theories have been revealed in the last year and make fans realize how difficult it is to realize director Masahiro Sakurai’s plans for the game!

One fan theory that has persisted online is that third parties would not receive more DLC fighters. Franchise Super Smash Bros. has expanded from a few previous entries to include third-party fighters, but Nintendo has been careful with how many characters it adds from external publishers. Both Microsoft and Square Enix have received DLC fighters in Final, as Banjo-Kazooie and Steve for the former, and Hero and Sephiroth for the latter. Sephiroth’s inclusion also shattered a theory that Nintendo focuses exclusively on heroic characters from third-party publishers, as opposed to villains.

Another fan theory revealed by Fighter’s Pass Vol. 2 was that the presence of a Spirit in the game meant that the character would not appear as a playable fighter. The first fighter revealed for this DLC set was Min Min, a character who debuted in arms. Min Min had previously appeared as a Spirit in Super Smash Bros. last, but continued to become a full-fledged fighter, giving hope to other characters currently in the game as Spirits.

While Spirits can no longer be seen as a way to disappoint playable fighters, it seems that the Mii Fighter costumes are still indicative of the characters who will not get into the game through DLC. ComicBook.com has predicted that Geno will not make the cut in Fighter’s Pass Vol. 2 after the revelation that Sephiroth will be included in the game. A few days after this article went live, Nintendo revealed a Mii Fighter character. King K. Rool is a playable character who first appeared as a Thousand Fighter skin, but who was in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U / 3DS. The character made the cut in the next game, proving that there is (possibly) hope for those added as Mii Fighter skins.

One theory that has not yet been rejected is the Amiibo theory. Fans used the release data for Amiibo-based figures Super Smash Bros. last to correctly guess when most DLC fighters will be revealed. The theory is not false, but it seems quite accurate. Readers can learn more about this right here.

At the end of the day, it seems that Nintendo and Masahiro Sakurai will always make the call they deem appropriate for the game, no matter what fans think will be the case. It’s fun to speculate and create these kinds of theories, but at the end of the day, it seems that the game’s DLC fighters are much harder to guess than anyone had anticipated!
