The strangest Golden Globe nominations

It’s a cherished American tradition: once a year, we meet to question the integrity and taste of the Golden Globe Awards. And in 2021, the film and television awards ceremony gave us a lot of weird choices to complain about.

Last week, it was revealed that the Netflix show “Emily in Paris” had flown ⅓ from the Globes voting group of 90 people in Paris and put them in the Peninsula hotel for 1,400 dollars a night for a token. The elegant journey to the City of Lights could have helped place the show in two nominations, including Best Comedy Series.

Meanwhile, Sia’s “Music” nominated film is full of controversy for its happy portrayal of autism. And to top it all off, it was reported just a few days ago that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which organizes the ceremony, has zero black members. One year banner!

But the Globes have long provoked skepticism and indignation over his shady relationships and the cuckoo’s choices. Here are some of the strangest Golden Globe choices ever.

A mystery not yet fully explained is Pia Zadora’s new star of the year award in 1982 for her performance in the critically eviscerated drama “Butterfly”. The unusual film is about an Arizona man (Stacy Keach) who begins an incestuous relationship with his long-lost daughter Kady (Zadora), who happens to be super into this kind of thing. Crude. Times critic Vincent Canby said the newcomer’s sexualized performance was “like a Brigitte Bardot that was recycled through a kitchen compactor.”

When Zadora won the award, some allegations claimed that her then-husband, Israeli billionaire Meshulam Riklis, influenced the Hollywood Foreign Press Association by hosting a lavish press junk at the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas, which she owned.

However, she claims to have won her fair trophy. A few months later, her performance will win her the Golden Raspberry Award for Best Worst Actress.

“Woman’s scent”

“Scent of a Woman” controversially won Best Picture – Drama after voters met with Al Pacino.

No one would call “Scent of a Woman” a bad movie. He also received the Oscar nods, and Al Pacino rightly won an Academy Award for his role as a blind lieutenant colonel. But he was never the leader of the season. (He competed against “A Few Good Men”, “Howard’s End”, “The Crying Game” and “Unforgiven”, which eventually won the Oscar for Best Picture). So when the film won the 1993 Golden Globe for Best Dramatic Film, HFPA woke up in the middle of another controversy. Hollywood insiders were outraged when it was revealed that many voters were transported to New York to meet with Pacino during the voting process. And no one would say who paid for the starry trip.

Halle Berry (“Frankie and Alice”)

Another criticism that Globes frequently faces is that they designate celebrities exclusively to bring them to the red carpet – A-list talent in D-list duds. This is definitely the best actress of 2011 in Halle Berry in a dramatic film, which nods “Frankie & Alice”. The small Canadian film about a stripper with a murderous divided personality has been confused by critics, although some have praised Berry’s work. Strangely, most Americans could not see her. While “Frankie & Alice” had a limited release in 2010 to qualify for the awards, its wide release was abandoned until 2014.

“The Martian”

What was the funniest part of the “Martian”? Was it when Matt Damon’s astronaut got stuck on Mars, apparently destined to die alone? Or when he managed to grow potatoes to prevent hunger? Maybe it was his last terrible maneuver to reach the crew sent to rescue him. What was your favorite song from the movie? Oh, right, they weren’t. All of the above is why people were scratching their heads when “The Martian” was nominated for – and won! – the “Best Film – Musical or Comedy” award in 2016. It eliminated real comedies, such as “The Great Short”, “Joy”, “The Spy” and “Trainwreck”.

Johnny Depp (“Alice in Wonderland”, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”)

For 20 solid years, HFPA has nominated Johnny Depp for a walk around the block. From 1991 to 2011, the actor received a mammoth 10 Golden Globe nominations. Compare him to his life, three of Oscar’s heads. However, more insane than pure money were the projects themselves, including “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” from 2005, in which he played Willy Wonka as a Wisconsin pharmacy official; “Alice in Wonderland” from 2010, with her crazy hat with flame hair; and, worst of all, “The Tourist”, also in 2010.

Critics have absolutely criticized “The Tourist”, which was a remake of a French film from 2005, but still managed to be the best musical or comedy film nominated for the Globe and undeservedly nodded to Depp and Angelina Jolie, who had an icy lack of chemistry. The inclusion was so criticized, host Ricky Gervais mocked it in his monologue.

“It’s been a great year for 3D movies,” he said. “Toy Story”, “Despicable Me”, “Tron” – it seems that this year everything was three-dimensional, except for the characters from “The Tourist”. “

Continuing, Gervais added: “I feel bad about this joke because I jump on the wagon. I haven’t even seen “The Tourist.” Who has? But he must be fine, because he was nominated. ”

Remember when Christina Aguilera gave a role in acting? If you answered “No”, you’re in luck. In 2010, she played an aspiring performer who moved to Los Angeles to make it big, only to end up working in a not-quite-common-band basement run by Cher. Post critic Lou Lumenick said of Aguilera’s turn: “Her acting debut will not keep Anne Hathaway awake at night.” However, he managed three golden globe gestures, including the best comedy or musical film.

John C. Reilly (“Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story”)

You can bet the bottom dollar that John C. Reilly never dreamed of or anticipated to receive honors for his musical styles. Let the Globes get there first. Reilly wrote the play for his character in “Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story,” a comic parody of Johnny Cash from 2007. The song is perfect, but it has lyrics like, “You know when I was a boy, people would say to me, ‘Slowly, Dewey, don’t walk so hard. ” “Reilly lost to Eddie Vedder.

Robin Williams (“Patch Adams”)

Robin Williams was one of our greatest comedians, but “Patch Adams” was easily one of his worst films. In the comedy, he played a suicidal man who becomes a medical student and questions traditional doctor-patient interactions. She’d rather pick it up. But, as Gene Siskel said, “Who would want Mork in their bed?” The film was an awkward mix of weak jokes and extreme sentimentality, and Williams’ performance was up to 11. Of course, the Golden Globes nominated him for Best Actor in a Comedy or Music Film, as well as in the ugly movie itself.
