Yesterday could have been a big deal for Apple with the launch of the M1 iMac, iPad Pro and AirTag trackers, but one of the Apple MacBook suppliers did not have such a good day. Bloomberg reports that Quanta Computer Inc., a key vendor for Apple MacBooks, has been hit with a $ 50 million ransomware attack by a well-known dark web hacking group REvil.
After refusing to pay the exorbitant amount, REvil repaired its threat. According to Bloomberg, the group “posted the diagrams for a new laptop, including 15 images detailing the courage of what appears to be a Macbook designed since March 2021.” Bloomberg did not disclose what was in the documents, but Macrumors, who also saw the diagrams after they were published, says it clearly shows new ports coming on the next-generation notebook:
On the right side of the device, there is a visible HDMI port, accompanied by a USB-C / Thunderbolt port and followed by an SD card reader. The left side has two additional USB-C / Thunderbolt ports and a MagSafe charging slot, for a total of three USB-C / Thunderbolt ports instead of four, as we have today.
Macrumors also says that “leaked images of the new MacBook Pro floating on Twitter also confirm that the device will not have a touch bar.”
It was previously rumored that Apple will return the ports and MagSafe to future MacBooks, as well as change the design and remove the Touch Bar. Apple just launched a new iMac at the Spring Loaded event, so we don’t expect to see new Macs until at least WWDC in June.
Michael Simon has been covering Apple since the iPod was iWalk. His obsession with technology returns to his first computer – the IBM Thinkpad with a high keyboard to change the unit. Still waiting for this to return in tbh style.
