The Senate approves the investigation of the contract between PREPA and Luma Energy

The Senate adopted the Senate Resolution on Thursday Ordering the Commission for Energy and Energy Projects to conduct an in-depth investigation into the award of the contract between the Electricity Authority (PREPA) and LUMA Energy, LLC

“There is an important agenda that involves the whole country. I am not tabling my first Resolution against a public policy, the public policy is made by the Legislative Assembly. The fact that the governor has appointed a steering committee does not prevent the Assembly from investigating. Different sectors have raised their voices saying that you are careful about this contract. I read the contract and it raises suspicions. It is not a partisan resolution and it is not against the WORLD, it is important to have the correct information “, underlined the author of the measure and the president of the Senate, José Luis Dalmau Santiago.

The resolution in the explanatory memorandum explains that “in order to guarantee a fair and transparent business for the people of Puerto Rico, we consider it urgent to investigate the award of the contract between the Electricity Authority and LUMA Energy, LLC. The Puerto Rican Senate must assess the procurement process, the scope of the agreement, its impact on the rights of employees of the public corporation, and its possible effect on the market and the corporation’s finances and billing for services to consumers. If necessary, the investigation shall weigh the viability and effects of the amendment or cancellation of the contract. “

For his part, the senator of the Victory Citizenship Movement (MVC), Rafael Bernabe, indicated that this LUMA contract was even contested by people in favor of privatization. “We are in favor of a thorough investigation and that we are doing everything possible to revoke this contract. That should be our perspective and our goal. We favor this resolution as part of the rejection of this contract, which is burdensome for the people of Puerto Rico, “Bernabe added.

Meanwhile, independent senator José Vargas Vidot indicated that the investigation is a positive step towards what is desired. He said the fear that he would remain under investigation did not rule out other possibilities and the complexity of the process should not discourage the sacred exercise of control.
