The Secretary of the Interior anticipates restrictive changes in the new executive order

Interior Secretary Noelia García Bardales announced on Tuesday that Governor Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia will contemplate more restrictive changes to the current executive order, which expires on Monday next week.

At a press conference in La Fortaleza, the cabinet official explained that the executive is considering even stricter changes and expects to announce them later in the week.

“The governor will speak promptly. He has his ear on the ground. The statistics are being analyzed and we certainly need to call for caution,” Garcia Bardales said after a meeting with the legislative delegations of the New Progressive Party.

“The fact that we have a million people vaccinated does not change the prescription for COVID-19. The prescription continues to be distancing, masking and prevention,” he told media.

The expressions come after a comeback in cases of COVID-19 in Puerto Rico has risen in recent weeks, reaching today the highest peak of hospitalizations since the beginning of the year.

In turn, the announcement comes a week after the appointed health secretary, Carlos Mellado López, announced the registration of several cases of different variants of the virus, one of those incidents that led to the death of a Puerto Rican.

“We remain in the position that, if changes are needed, changes will indeed be made. The current order expires on Monday, before that, it will be announced if it is extended and if there are changes,” he concluded.
