The San Francisco 49ers lose Martin Mayhew to Washington

The 49ers will not lose player vice president Adam Peters, but they will be losing player vice president Martin Mayhew to the Washington football team for NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport.

Mayhew’s role in Washington is unknown, but he will not take over as general manager, as the team is to hire Marty Hurney in that position.

As Hurney takes over as general manager, Mayhew’s departure means the 49ers will not be rewarded with a compensatory draft pick in the third round. The extended Rooney rule requires that minority candidates be hired as head coaches and general managers to receive those additional projects.

Matt Barrows of Athletic wrote that San Francisco does not expect any compensation.

Mayhew joined the 49ers front office in 2017 as a senior executive staff. He received a promotion to the VP of the player’s staff before the 2019 season. Before coming to San Francisco, Mayhew spent a year in the New York Giants office. Prior to that, he was with the Detroit Lions for 15 seasons, including seven as general manager.
