The San Diego Padres agree to a deal to buy him right Joe Musgrove from the Pittsburgh Pirates, sources told Jeff Passan of ESPN.
The Musgrove trade is pending medical reviews, according to sources, and will send a large package of potential back to the Pirates. Hudson Head, a well-regarded central player, is expected to be part of the group heading to Pittsburgh.
Musgrove, 28, was 1-5 with an ERA of 3.86 in eight pirate starts in the 2020 season shortened by the coronavirus pandemic.
Musgrove, the starter of the team opening in 2020, is set to earn $ 4.45 million in 2021, after he and the Pirates agreed a contract last Friday to avoid arbitration.
He is 29-38 with an ERA of 4.33 over 108 appearances in five major league seasons, including 83 starts.
Musgrove is the third starting player acquired by the Padres this season. San Diego acquired left-hander Blake Snell and left-hander Yu Darvish in separate blockbuster deals last month with the Tampa Bay Rays and Chicago Cubs, respectively.
This is the second significant trade completed by the Reconstruction Pirates, who traded first baseman Josh Bell to the Washington Nationals last month.
