The Reds wanted Gleyber Torres of the Yankees in the deal rumored by Luis Castillo

No wonder the rumored transaction with Luis Castillo to the Yankees is not happening.

In exchange for Castillo, the Reds demanded Yankees shortstop Gleyber Torres and more, MLB Network’s Jon Heyman reported Monday.

The Internet was hectic over the weekend, with erroneous reports of a deal involving Castillo, the red star pitcher, who went to the Yankees for Clint Frazier and Miguel Andujar. But Reds general manager Nick Krall strongly denied the reports, even addressing them publicly.

“[The rumors] they are completely false, “Krall wrote in a text to MLB.com. “It simply came to our notice then [Castillo] as a member of our rotation for 2021. ”

Landing Castillo, the 28-year-old right-hand man who was All-Star in 2019 and had an ERA of 3.62 in the last four years, would have been a big blow to the Yankees rotation. But not at the price of Torres, the 24-year-old who was All-Star in 2018 and 2019.

Torres had a tough 2020, with his batting average (.243) and OPS (.724) low during the shortened season. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told YES Network in December that Torres did not show up for the second spring training session in “best shape,” believing he needed 40-45 games to find his form.

Although Cashman also acknowledged that Torres may be better suited to play second baseman, Torres is expected to stay on the break after the Yankees agreed to re-sign DJ LeMahieu on a six-year contract. $ 90 million last week.
