An update to the PlayStation Direct list for PS4 Pro suggests that Sony will no longer sell the console in its showcase, leading to speculation that it might be preparing to discontinue the model.
Currently, the PS4 Pro is marked as “sold out” on the PlayStation Direct site in the US, but it was noted (via GamesRadar) that the list also says that “currently there are no plans to remake this article in the future” PS4 Slim’s core is also listed as “exhausted”, but in particular, there is no indication that Sony does not intend to add more stocks in the future.
Of course, this has led to speculation that Sony intends to discontinue the PS4 Pro now that the PS5 has launched and the demand is high.
Sony has not actually confirmed that it intends to discontinue the PS4 Pro, but it would not be the biggest surprise if it did. Earlier this year, Microsoft discontinued the Xbox One X, the equivalent of the mid-generation PS4 Pro, alongside the Xbox One S All-Digital Edition, while keeping the Xbox One S basic on the shelves, calling it a “natural step” ahead. launch of the next generation Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.
PS4 No?
SIE CEO Jim Ryan has made it clear in the past that while Sony feels “a responsibility to serve” the PS4 community “for several years after the PS5 launch,” he still believes in the idea of console generations; offering PS5 new and exclusive features that are not available on PS4.
Exciting new features are generally a good way to encourage existing PS4 owners to make the leap to PS5. However, removing the PS4 Pro’s intermediate option would make it even easier for gamers to access the latest hardware. Since the PS4 Pro and PS5 Digital Edition are both listed on PlayStation Direct for $ 399, the PS4 Pro isn’t really premium or a value proposition. With the price of the PS5 digital edition, Sony no doubt continues to serve those who are interested in upgrading to a console at a lower price, without risking that a large part of its player base will be left to disappear in the previous generation. .
It is still possible that Sony will continue to produce the PS4 Pro, but sell the console through retailers, maintaining its own store directly limited to the base PS4 and PS5. However, given the high level of demand for the PS5 at the moment, it would make a lot of sense for Sony to focus on getting more units from the latest console.
