The prosecutor’s office ordered new evidence in the case of the assassination of Luis Carlos Galán – Crimes – Justice

Nearly 32 years after he was assassinated at a political event in Soacha, the investigation into the assassination of former presidential candidate Luis Carlos Galán, which took place in August 1989, continues to have new movements.

In this week It was known that General (r) Carlos Enrique Rodríguez González was involved in the criminal prosecution of the Prosecutor’s Office and requested an investigation, who was summoned as a witness at the time to explain how the operation ended with the capture of several people who were initially accused of participating in the events, but were later found to have nothing to do with it. .

But the involvement of General (r) Rodríguez González is not the only new evidence that the Prosecutor’s Office is analyzing in this case.

The prosecution also called for an investigation to Major José Fernando Reyes Calvache Reyes, who was the Sijín chief of the Cundinamarca Police at the time of Galán’s assassination.

Calvache is accused of co-authoring a conspiracy to commit a crime and murder for terrorist purposes against the former presidential candidate, bodyguard Santiago Cuervo, councilor Julio César Peñaloza Sánchez and the attempted murder of bodyguard Pedro Nel Angulo.

Although an investigation had been closed against the largest in 2017, in August 2020 the Prosecutor’s Office annulled that decision and investigated it again and now He called him to this investigation, which was scheduled for March 19 this year at 9 am m.

On the other hand, it was also requested that the free version of Colonel (r) Hernando Arciniegas Sánchez, who was the head of the drug department in Dijín at the time, be extended. At first, the Prosecutor’s Office opened an investigation, but in 2017 it was considered that there were no reasons to further investigate him for participating in the operations that led to the capture and imprisonment of 5 innocent people who sought to divert the investigation.

In 2020, the prosecutor of the second instance said that although in the first instance it was said that the colonel committed the aforementioned deeds under duress and driven by the insurmountable fear of being fired from the police, It was not argued how this conclusion was reached or what evidence was assessed to make that claim, for which it annulled the decision that closed the investigation against him.

Therefore, the Prosecutor’s Office convened it for February 16 and 17, 2021, at 9 am, to expand its free version.

It was also ordered to extend the statement of Colonel Norberto Peláez Restrepo, who at the time was Deputy Director of Dijín and who was also accused of participating in the capture of the innocent in order to deflect the trial. This statement will be on February 18 next.

In addition, the accusing entity ordered that, through investigative work, it be established who served as secretary of the Dijín Narcotics Section in August 1989.

On the other hand, the Prosecutor’s Office also ordered the extension of the statement of Norberto Murillo Chalarca and Pedro Telmo Zambrano Delgado, both belonging to the group of 5 innocent people who were detained for the events of that time.

Murillo and Zambrano were imprisoned for 3 years on charges of involvement in the Galán crime until in 1992 the Prosecutor’s Office ordered their release.

For the assassination of Luis Carlos Galán, former senator and former minister Alberto Santofimio Botero, so far the only politician tried and convicted in this case, was sentenced to 24 years in prison.

In March 2020, Santofimio was released on parole after paying most of his prison sentence.
