The Chamber of Deputies accepted the amendments brought by the Senate of the Republic to the draft law amending the Civil Code and prohibiting the marriage of children and turning it into Law.
After being accepted by the plenary session of the deputies, the so-called law will pass the Executive Power, which can respect or promulgate it.
After being approved by the Chamber of Deputies in two consecutive readings in November, the piece amending Article 144 and repealing Article 145 of the Civil Code of the Dominican Republic, passed the Senate and was sent to the Standing Committee on Justice, where changes were made. .
The chairman of that commission and the senator of the province of Santo Domingo, Antonio Taveras, ordered more than 10 amendments to the bill, but clarified at that time that he would not change his goal.
As for the changes, lawmaker José Horacio said the Senate “has made it possible to enrich the project. It is a stronger text in legal terms and allows a happy end-of-year gift for the Dominican Republic.”
The law aimed at eliminating child marriage was approved in two consecutive readings by the plenary session of deputies in November last year.
The initiative was presented by MP José Horacio Rodríguez and received a favorable report from the Lower House Justice Commission.
With the adoption of this draft resolution, Rule 144 of the Civil Code was amended to read as follows: “A man or a woman may in no case marry before the age of 18”.
Similarly, Article 145 is deleted, which states that “however, the Government may, for serious reasons, grant old age exemptions”.
