The pandemic kicks off the year with a record number of nearly 14,000 deaths a day

The World Health Organization (WHO) today reported 13,997 deaths in the past 24 hours, the highest one-year figure of the covid-19 pandemic, so the total number of deaths since the start of the health crisis stands at 1.8 million.

COVID-19 cases are nearly 82 million, of which 693,000 were recorded in the last day, an increase compared to previous days, but which has not yet reached the record number of December 20 (841,000 infections in one day).

America, which reported 6,300 deaths on the last day of 2020, adds 858,000 deaths, while Europe has registered 5,900 deaths and 582,000 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

The United States remains the country with the highest death toll (335,000), followed by Brazil (193,000), India (148,000) and Mexico (124,000).

They are followed by four European countries: Italy (74,000 dead), the United Kingdom (73,000), France (64,000) and Russia (57,000).

There are 59 million recovered patients on Earth, while of the 22 million active cases, 0.5 percent (106,000) are in a serious or critical condition.
