The packers use the restricted auction in the second round for TE Robert Tonyan

The Green Bay Packers are returning Robert Tonyan to a restricted free agent offer.

According to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Packers offered Tonyan the second-round auction, which costs $ 3.384 million on the ceiling in 2021.

The restricted auction is a one-year guaranteed offer. It allows Tonyan the opportunity to sign an offer sheet with another team, but if the Packers do not comply with the agreement, the team should send Green Bay a second-round selection in the 2021 draft, setting a level of compensation to it should discourage teams from making the move.

Tonyan caught 52 passes for 586 yards and 11 touchdowns in 16 games in 2020. He averaged 11.3 yards per catch and 9.9 yards per goal, catching 88.1% of its targets.

According to Silverstein, the auction could be a prelude for the Packers to negotiate a long-term deal.

Tonyan is one of six restricted free agents, but is the only player expected to receive an offer from the Packers.
