The first-generation Galaxy Chromebook didn’t set the world on fire, even with the spicy red paint. Although it’s sleek and stylish, and its 13.3 “4K AMOLED touchscreen is extremely low, the inappropriate battery life from the first reviews made it a constant target of discounts. I’ve never seen it before: only $ 499.
It’s half the initial retail price and hundreds less than we’ve seen so far, for the model with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of SSD storage. It is powered by a 10th generation Intel Core i5 processor (a good step up from most Chromebooks) and has a reversible hinge, two USB-C ports, a stylus with a built-in compartment, a MicroSD card slot and a fingerprint digital sensor built into the power button. It even has a secondary webcam on the keyboard, if you want to take tablet-style photos. Samsung is selling this new all-aluminum chassis unit in the Fiesta Red or (if you’re bored) Mercury Gray.
Samsung replaced this model with the Galaxy Chromebook 2 in 2021, giving up the expensive AMOLED screen for a 1080p QLED screen and either a Celeron or i3 processor. It is a much cheaper and more practical design and probably sells much better, as these trade-offs (and a thicker body) have led to much better battery life. But if you are still longing for the elegant opulence of the original design, you are unlikely to find it from a major seller for much longer.
