You still love Harry Potter the franchise, but absolutely can’t support its terrible author? If yes, Magic: The Assemblylast set of cards, Strixhaven: School of Magi, it could be for you.
More than just a card game played to demoralize your friends, Magic: The Assembly it has its own story, each new set of books taking place in magical realms called airplanes. Recent aircraft have included a Viking theme Kaldheim, inspired by the fairy tale Eldraine, and now with Strixhaven, the publisher of Wizards of the Coasts, proposes its popular card game at Hogwarts.
Stop me if you’ve heard him before. Strixhaven is a school for magicians founded by five powerful dragons, each with its own disciplines and personalities. They divided their school into five different colleges, each college being dedicated to the ideals of their founders. Magic posted a short, cute blog about each of the colleagues. Strixhaven sounds a lot like a real university with departments of math, science, history and literature, each with its own unique magical flair.
I love Magic: assembly, but I was always more attracted to the characters on the books than to the worlds they occupied. I identified with black characters like Kaya and safely and deeply respected characters like Ashiok, despite the misfortune they have caused me whenever their card materialized from the hand of my opponent.

With StrixhavenI am very excited to learn more about the world. It looks so fun – a stark contrast to Magicordinary stories about war or surviving in monster-infested environments. Strixhaven it seems that these are just children learning and having fun, and that means a nice change of pace –Magic could use a little ease. You can not Nicol Bolas He’s trying to take over the worlds all the time, isn’t he?
Here is my brief summary of the schools.
Witherbloom is the school for organic nerds who like to go to the living or the dead and certainly have a collection of taxidermy pets. Quandrix is the school that somehow managed to make boring magic by adding math. Prismari is the school for dramatic children – at all hours of the day, at least one person can be heard singing “Seasons of Love”. Lorehold is the college of history and is populated entirely by children who read at lunch, at recess and while in the toilet. Finally, Silverquill is for literary nerd who believes that wearing black is a substitute for having personality.
Along with a standard set of cards, Wizards will launch order packs for each of their colleagues. I personally choose Lorehold, since I am a history nerd, who is in favor of white hand games and … I was one of those children who read at lunch, at recess and in the toilet.
Strixhaven: School of Magi he won’t go out for two more months, but you can expect to see more books and hopefully more of the story as we get closer to the release date.
