The tandem bus is now dangling over the roadway below, the NYPD said.
The crash happened at midnight on Thursday on the Cross Bronx Expressway and University Avenue westbound, according to the NYPD. The injured have been taken to nearby hospitals, police said.
“The bus fell about 20 feet on the access road,” said Paul Hopper, deputy chief of the FDNY on the New York City Fire Department’s Instagram account.
It is still unclear whether the accident was caused by an operator error or a mechanical malfunction and no arrests have been made so far, police added.
Streets near the accident site are now closed, and officials say traffic in the area has slowed. Police say there are heavy tow trucks on the scene preparing to remove the dangling bus.
“We are currently ensuring that all fuel and other hazardous materials are secured in the vehicle until the bus can be pulled onto the roadway,” said Steven Moore, FDNY’s acting battalion chief, on Instagram.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has released a statement.
“When an incident like this occurs, we take it very seriously. We are conducting a full investigation and will implement the lessons learned to prevent it from happening again. We are sure this was a terrifying incident for those customers in the bus. Our hearts go to them in the hope that they can recover quickly, ”said Patrick Warren, MTA’s Chief Safety and Security Officer.
