The new Magic keyboard brings Touch ID to all M1 Macs

Apple’s new Magic Keyboard for Mac, which comes equipped with a Touch ID sensor, is compatible with all MacOS machines running an M1 chip. For now, it’s only available with the iMac.

Featured alongside a refurbished 24-inch iMac on Tuesday, Magic Keyboard is Apple’s first wireless Mac peripheral that incorporates Touch ID authentication for connecting to macOS, purchasing items with Apple Pay, interacting with third-party applications, and more.

As the blogger mentioned Rene Ritchie, the keyboard can be used by other M1 Macs, enabling Touch ID security for the Mac mini and expanding the capabilities of the 13-inch MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. Although the two Apple Silicon laptop models have Touch ID built into the respective power buttons, there has not yet been a comparable replacement for the flap mode function.

It should be noted that the implementation is related to the secure enclave of the M1, which means that the Magic Keyboard will work like a normal Bluetooth keyboard when connected to an Intel Mac or PC.

Currently, Magic Keyboard is limited to the new 24-inch iMac, although this may change in the future, as Apple usually expands the availability of its peripherals. As it stands, iMac buyers can choose from three different Magic keyboard options, including a numeric keypad model and a standard version without Touch ID.
