Today, Apple unveiled its new Apple TV 4K. Nearly four years after its initial launch, the company has introduced the new set-top-box with the A12 chip, a new Siri Remote and HDMI 2.1 support for a better 4K HDR experience.
9to5Mac It was first discovered on tvOS 14.5 beta 6 that Apple mentions 120Hz refresh rate support in the code, but at the time, Apple didn’t have Apple TV to work with this higher refresh rate because the fifth-generation Apple TV only supports HDMI 2.0.
More references to “120Hz” and “supports120Hz” have been added to the PineBoard tvOS in the latest beta. … These references suggest that Apple is testing at least internally a 120Hz mode for Apple TV.
However, it is important to note that the current Apple TV 4K does not support 120Hz – even with a software update. That’s because the current generation Apple TV is equipped with an HDMI 2.0 port, which is limited to 4K resolution at 60Hz. To enable 4K resolution at 120Hz, an HDMI 2.1 port is required.
With the new Apple TV 4K using HDMI 2.1, it’s not clear why Apple hasn’t implemented support for the 120Hz refresh rate yet. During the presentation, the company explored how the new set-top box improved the 4K HDR experience, but without going into too much detail. On the 4K TV page, Apple mentions this:
Support for HDR video output up to 4K 60 fps. Requires HDCP when playing protected content.
The company is likely to save the 120Hz refresh rate feature that will be introduced with tvOS 15 at WWDC 2021. With 120Hz support, gamers and sports enthusiasts could enjoy a smoother image while playing real-time games. or watch live sports.
