The Mets add Kevin Pillar to the free MLB agency

The Mets have made a new update to their field, accepting a contract with free agent Kevin Pillar on Monday, confirmed Mike Puma from The Post.

The exact terms of the transaction were not immediately known.

The 32-year-old Mets offer a third downtown option, along with Brandon Nimmo and minor league signing Albert Almora Jr. He may also offer some flexibility on the left field, where Dom Smith is likely to start.

The right-hander returned after seven seasons with the Blue Jays. He hit .308 with two home runs, 13 RBIs and a .801 OPS in 24 games to close 2020 with the Rockies. The Pillar started last season with the Red Sox, hitting .274 in 30 games.

The Mets, who failed to see George Springer, the midfielder without the awards, have been looking to improve their ground this season. While Pillar played mostly in the center, he is not the same player he played earlier in his career. But he could also serve as a defensive replacement for Smith on the left. It could also start against the left, against which it has a slash of .298 / .332 / .538 in the last two years.
