The mayor of Loíza clarifies comments on sexist attitudes in the PPD

The Mayor of Loíza, Julia Nazario Fuentes, clarified today, Friday, his comments according to which the People’s Democratic Party was a macho community and expressed that it is a problem of both his party and the New Progressive Party (PNP).

In an interview with this environment, the municipal executive explained that her expressions should have been taken in general and not as a direct message to the PPD leadership.

“Both PPD and PNP are sexist parties, they are,” Nazario Fuentes said, adding that this is because the country is generally sexist.

Her initial expressions appeared yesterday when she was approached by a medium about who should chair the PPD. She said that she should be the mayor of Morovis, Carmen Maldonado, but that she could receive macho attitudes from some in the party.

Maldonado, who is also the community’s vice president, resigned from the PPD presidency yesterday, leaving José Luis Dalmau Santiago as the only candidate at the time.

Nazario Fuentes also clarified that his comments were directed to the order being executed, given that if a vacancy occurs in the presidency, then the position should pass to his successor, in this case Maldonado.

Prior to the PPD board meeting, several popular leaders argued that the community could not be sexist because the first female governor belonged to that party. Then they listed other popular leaders as additional examples.

Asked for a reaction in this regard, the mayor said that the appointment of these people is not enough.

“Machism has nothing to do with how many of us there are. It has to do with where we are and how they treat us when we get there. We got to work,” he said.
