The long lines mark the first day of the Lexington VA vaccine clinic

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – The VA Healthcare system in Lexington today vaccinated more than 1,000 veterans, despite the challenges of the first day of the clinic.

The organization hosted a COVID-19 vaccination action, which is the first such opportunity in the country.

Vaccine demand has been high. Veterinarians waited in the snow for a chance to get the shots. Some came in and out in less than an hour. Others waited much longer.

VA said it hopes to improve the waiting time ahead.

“We are working to get everyone to the hospital in the areas where we can get vaccinated as soon as possible.” said volunteer officer Patrick Sinclair.

Regardless, the men and women who have served our country say that everyone can help in this fight.

“If you think about not receiving [the vaccine]”Please rethink,” said veteran Thomas Harrison. “Please reconsider. Because it will help the whole country. It is not just about one person or individual, but about the whole country. ”

The walk-in clinic will open Sunday and Monday on the Bowling campus near the University of Kentucky. VA adjusted the original hours. It will now open at 8 p.m. The deadline will be at 14 pm Anyone in line or in the parking garage before then will be seen.
